The Dance of Surrender We are deeply into the Autumn season now, experiencing shortening days and long, dark evenings. Nature is in her phase of letting go, of becoming fallow and quiet. It is the beginning of a new cycle where all that has been seeded, sprouted, grown and blossomed now returns back to the earth to rest and rejuvenate within. Is there anything in your life that you are releasing? Are there aspects that are being let go in order to create the rich compost that will nourish your future seeds? The dancefloor is an open space to release and let go, to clear and empty, to make room for more of your essence to shine out into this world! CURRENT EVENTS Monday Evenings 7-9pm, Beaver Point Hall, $10-15. Monday nights offer a sweet dance experience - there's often a core group of dancers and lots of spaciousness on the dance floor to move and get creative. Thursday Evenings 7-9pm, Beaver Point Hall, $10-15. And of course, if you want to get swept into the wild energy of a full dance floor then this one's for you! A Note About Children: On Thursday evenings, we now have a playmate for the kids when they’re not up for dancing. This is not a childcare or babysitting service – your kids are still solely your responsibility. You are still required to keep an eye out for your kids and check on them regularly. Dance Temple is offering compensation for this service, and in the spirit of acknowledgement and appreciation, we are also asking for tips /donations for the big energy this requires. We'd suggest 2-5$ per evening. Thanks for helping us hold the diversity of our community in the dance! A NOTE FROM THE DANCE TEMPLE COLLECTIVE We want to take this opportunity to share with the greater community the financial and business structure of Dance Temple. Dance Temple is currently a sole proprietorship business. 6 women, that we call 'the Collective', function as the administrative team that supports and make decisions pertaining to this business. The word ‘collective’ refers to how we make decisions internally but not to our external structure. We’re not a not for profit. We all get paid per contract and pay other contractors (DJs and guests) on an individual basis. On a regular high-season week we bring in a gross (before expenses) of $1000 from both Monday and Thursday nights. -52% goes to the facilitator and door person. This works out to approximately $15/hour with the time and work that is put into each set and time spent at the hall. This doesn't include music purchase (we buy all of the music that we play). -15% goes to rent. -25% goes to general admin. This pays a monthly stipend to main admin, bookkeeper, web and newsletter/writing as well as money that gets dispersed 6 ways for meeting time, ongoing conversation online to arrange calendars, report back about each night, manage feedback, interpersonal and personal issues that arise at Dance Temple and the many many unnamed things that come from running a business with 6 people. This ends up looking like around $8-10/hour. -5% goes to equipment purchases or charities (we have bought $5000 worth of gear in the past 2.5 years as well as paid out $1500 to charities and local causes). -3% goes to tending the kids who come to dance. -Other regular costs include insurance and extra door people when needed. We hope this helps to clarify! We love what we do and are grateful for the nominal income that we receive from the community for it. We are proud to have kept the entry cost the lowest of any ecstatic dance that we know of internationally. Because we are 6 people running the show, we make much less than other successful dancefloors but feel that this is part of the magic of our Salt Spring Dance Temple. OTHER EVENTS THIS MONTH Awakening the Goddess ~ with Shauna Devlin A 3 part series (attend 1 or all) where dance, ceremony and sitting in circle are used to ignite and awaken the divine Goddess nature that is our birth rite. Dance reunites the body, soul and mind. Ceremony offers sacredness in a modern world where we have forgotten its gift. Sitting together in circle allows for deep connection and healing.
